Specialty Belt Conveyors Solves Severe Degradation Problem

In 1999 a SC chemical manufacturing plant contacted Carolina Material Technologies (CMT) in urgent need of a conveying systems that would not degrade their product, copper oxide. The product needed to be conveyed from a dryer, 45' vertical to a screener and then convey this final, screened product from a surge bin to their bagging operation.
Existing Problem
The company had installed a pneumatic conveying system in September of 1999 and quickly found that their product was being degraded by the pneumatic conveying system to a point where it could not be sold. The company desperately needed a solution and needed this immediately.
The Solution
The company contacted CMT, whom they had worked with in the past. Their needs included:
- Conveying from the dryer, 12' horizontally, in the x-plane.
- Conveying 5' horizontally in the y-plane.
- Conveying 45' vertically to the screener.
- Conveying from the surge bin 6' horizontally, 25' vertically and 6' horizontally.
- Convey the product without degradation.
Z-Configuration Packaging Conveyor
Omni-Lift's specialty belt conveyors were quickly identified as the best solution for this application. Omni-Lift's belts are a one-piece molded design, which use "fingers" to carry the product, even at 90-degree inclines. The conveyors can be configured in straight, "L" and "Z" configurations and are efficient enough to convey water.
Testing was performed at Omni-Lift's facility within one week with samples returned to the customer for approval. Approval was immediately given and three specialty belt conveyors were ordered to meet the above requirements.
- The system was installed in February of 2001.

Making Decisions About Conveyor Systems Suppliers

Supplier relationships are critical in any industry but if you are choosing a conveyor system and movement of product or raw material is key to your business, choosing the correct manufacturer is imperative.
Every new project of this nature starts at the same place, your requirements. It is crucial that you clearly think through your specific needs by category and write down and review the details that will make your purchase successful. I say by category, because you need to build a hierarchy of your requirements that might include things like facility layout, material movement route, product treatment, cost, speed, maintenance, safety, ergonomics, uptime, etc. It is useful to do a thorough review of your existing systems and relationships. Your requirements for a new system should take past experience into account.
You also need to decide up front how your relationship with the new vendor will be managed. If possible, develop a governance process that includes the kinds of meetings, written communications, liaison roles, project management process, problem management process, new work order management process, and maintenance process that you'll implement with the new supplier. You should record your vision for the relationship with the new supplier not only quantitatively but qualitatively.
Armed with a deeply researched understanding of what you need and how you will interact with the new supplier, you can then go about the process of narrowing down the list of particular manufacturers. Contacts within your industry may be the best source for identifying reputable suppliers. There are likely conveyor manufacturers within your industry that have specific industry experience and a positive reputation among your competitors. These are the companies to talk to first. Set up a meeting with each supplier and tell them that the first thing you want to do is review your detailed requirements with them. In the requirements review meeting, you will get a good idea of whether the supplier is interested in knowing what you really need, or just wants to make a sale. This is in fact, one of the most important selection criteria.
In follow-up meetings, you'll get to hear the supplier's reaction to your requirements. If they understood you clearly and are working towards a solution that will make you happy they have passed the first test. But the next thing to understand fully is whether they're capable of delivering the kind of solution they are talking about. Here is where you need to quiz them about how they go about implementing logistical systems. You'll want to see their customer relationship process, their project management process, and demonstrations of their technology. You'll want to visit their customer's sites. Additionally, you want to obtain customer references within your industry. If their existing customers will give you insight into their maintenance and performance information, so much the better.
After repeating this process with the most likely candidates, at a minimum you should understand your own requirements better, and most likely will have encountered new ideas that can be incorporated into your requirements. It is also likely that you will have found a conveyor systems supplier that will meet your needs with a relatively high degree of certainty.

The Load Detection Of Crushing Equipments
